Celebrities, athletes and locals helped raise over $275,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

WHO: Over 3,000 fit and ruthless celebrities, athletes, corporate teams, paratriathletes and professional triathletes competed side-by-side on the shores of Miami Beach for the 4th annual Nautica South Beach Triathlon, raising over $275,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, one of the world’s premier centers for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases. Jimi Jamison, former lead singer of 80’s rock band Survivor kicked off the competition by singing the National Anthem as well as his hit, motivational song “Eye of the Tiger.”

For the first time ever, the 2011 Nautica South Beach Triathlon was the first leg of The Life Time Fitness Triathlon Series Race to the Toyota Cup, an internationally-renowned series for both professional and amateur athletes that is made up of seven of the most prominent international-distance triathlon events in the United States. The competitive series, currently led by Cameron Dye, concludes on October 2nd in Dallas, Texas.

WHAT: At 6:55 a.m., the International Distance Race kicked off with an invigorating 1.5K ocean swim, a 40k bike over Miami Beach’s causeways, and concluded with a 10K run alongside Miami Beach’s famous Art Deco District. At 7:40 a.m. participants in the Classic Distance Race hit the beach for a half-mile ocean swim, 19-mile bike and four-mile run. Both races made their grand finish on the sizzling sands of South Beach. Hundreds of cheering spectators came out to support the competitors and enjoy the interactive expo tents and witness the Nautica Kid’s Run and Tot Trot races.
